Makita XFD131 review: the kit, the job and ownership

An 18V LXT brushless kit to consider when its battery system fits the equipment you intend to keep.

Makita lists a half-inch brushless driver-drill, a 3.0Ah LXT battery, charger and tool bag in the XFD131 kit. It offers two mechanical speed ranges. The manufacturer page contains differing weight figures, so we do not use its weight as a comparison score.

Picture the job

If the first project is a modest assembly task, write down the accessories and materials before comparing motor claims. The tool needs to be manageable in the actual position, with the selected battery attached. Where possible, handle the complete setup. A specification for the bare body cannot answer how a particular user will find its balance or controls.

The ownership decision

LXT ownership can be a sound reason to keep this kit on a shortlist, provided the batteries and tools are actually compatible according to Makita. It is not a reason to buy a more expensive package than the job needs. Compare the kit number, battery capacity and charger against the exact alternative listing. Similar XFD13-family packages may contain different items.
