Match the tool to your project

A good fit if…
You have an identified material and finishing process and are choosing a five-inch random-orbit sander with compatible abrasives and dust equipment.
Look elsewhere if…
You need a detail sander for tight corners, a floor sander, or an assessment of an unknown old coating before disturbing it.
DEWALT DWE6423, Bosch ROS20VSC, Makita BO5041 and SKIL SR211601 share a broad tool category. Their grip arrangements, dust connections and included accessories are the details to inspect.
The surface decision comes first
A sander does not tell you whether an old coating or substrate is safe to disturb. Identify the material and use the relevant preparation instructions. For an unknown old finish, arrange the appropriate assessment before turning the project into a sanding task. These products are not recommendations for lead, asbestos or other hazardous-material work.
Compare the system around the tool
Include compatible abrasives, work support, dust equipment and any adapter in the budget. An included bag or canister does not promise a dust-free room. Check the actual hose and port requirements, not just whether two photographs look alike. For corded tools, verify regional power requirements and plan a suitable cable route.
Grip and speed are things to evaluate
A palm body and an adjustable front-handle arrangement may suit different supported work positions. Handle the controls if possible and follow the manual. Published speed ranges indicate available adjustment, not a finish-quality ranking. The largest OPM or amperage number does not establish the best result for a material or user.
Keep consumable details with the purchase
Five-inch is not the only compatibility detail. Check the attachment system and hole pattern, and confirm replacement availability. A few included sheets are a starter supply, not a complete abrasive sequence for every finish. Make a labelled sample using the process appropriate to the material before treating the main project.
Distinguish the model from the kit
A suffix may add a bag, case or accessories. Read the included-items list for the listing you intend to buy. This comparison uses published information and original purchase analysis; we have not measured vibration, removal rate or dust capture. Choose a setup you can complete and use as instructed rather than treating any one specification as a universal winner.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| A good fit for | Consider it for a known finishing task where a mains-powered setup and compatible dust arrangements are available. | Consider it when a palm-style tool and a documented accessory package match the way you plan to support the work. | Consider it for a defined finishing setup where you want to evaluate a two-handle grip arrangement. | Consider it when you want to compare a compact palm format and a small included abrasive starter set. |
| Product format | A corded five-inch random-orbit sander to compare around the grip, speed control and dust connection you need. | A five-inch corded sander package with a canister and hose adapter to inspect as part of your finishing setup. | A corded random-orbit sander to compare when an adjustable front handle is relevant to your supported work. | A variable-speed five-inch sander with a visible dust container, for a task-based shortlist rather than a price ranking. |
| Before you buy | Confirm abrasive size and hole arrangement, hose compatibility, adapter requirements and whether a case is actually included. | Verify the 120V regional model, the listed adapter and the abrasive attachment and hole pattern. | Confirm the eight-hole five-inch abrasive format, local power specification and exact package contents. | Check replacement-disc fit, local power requirements and the collection arrangements permitted by the current manual. |
| The trade-off | An included dust bag does not make unknown old coatings safe to sand or guarantee a dust-free room. | The canister is not a guarantee of complete dust capture, and the adapter may not fit every hose without other parts. | A round abrasive cannot reach every internal corner, and a handle feature does not replace appropriate work support. | We have not tested finish quality, vibration or dust capture; speed and amperage do not provide that ranking. |
