The material removed by cuts, any unusable ends and the number of boards available can change whether the pieces fit. A one-dimensional cut planner helps you examine those quantities before collection or a discussion with a timber supplier.

It does not design a joint or tell you how to operate a saw. Start with a parts list whose dimensions have already been checked for the project. Keep construction details, machine instructions and the suitability of the material as separate decisions.

Group only genuinely interchangeable stock

Keep different materials and profiles separate. Two boards with the same length may differ in width, thickness, species, grade or finish. A useful group label might include the material and the actual cross-section, rather than simply saying timber.

Check nominal and actual dimensions with the supplier. Record the usable stock lengths and quantities you can buy or already own. An offcut should be entered by its usable length, excluding damaged portions you have already identified, not by an optimistic measurement across a split end.

Keep units attached to the numbers

Choose one unit for the calculation and convert consistently. Do not mix millimetres and inches in the same length column. If using fractional inches, check the conversion and retain enough precision for the planning purpose before making any final cutting decision.

Label every requested piece with its quantity and material group. Check whether the listed lengths are rough blanks or final dimensions. A rough cutting plan should not silently become a final joinery schedule. Include notes about grain direction, appearance or other selection constraints that a length-only algorithm cannot judge.

Include the material consumed by each cut

Kerf is the width of material removed by the cutting process. Use the value appropriate to the actual setup and confirm it through the relevant instructions and measurement. Add any planned trim at the ends of each stock piece separately. Neither figure should be guessed from a generic app example and treated as a cutting instruction.

For an illustrative arithmetic check, consider a 2,400-millimetre board with no end trim and a conservative allowance of three millimetres after each extracted piece. Two pieces of 1,197 millimetres consume 2,400 millimetres under that convention. Two pieces of 1,198 millimetres would not both fit. The example explains the planner’s allowance rule, not a recommended saw setting.

Inspect the proposed arrangement

Review each stock board, the assigned pieces and the remaining offcut. Pay attention to pieces marked unplaced. They may exceed the usable stock length, belong to a different material group or require more stock than you entered. Do not remove the warning by reducing a required dimension without reviewing the project.

A greedy arrangement can be useful without being a mathematically optimal solution. Compare alternative stock lengths and quantities if waste or cost matters. The lowest leftover total may still be a poor choice when transport, available stock, defects or appearance requirements are considered.

Export the board plan and parts list for review, keeping the inputs and calculation convention visible. Ask the person performing the cuts to confirm the measurements, material selection and working method. Label retained offcuts afterwards with their usable lengths and profiles. That keeps the planning tool in its useful role: organising material quantities before the physical work begins.

Open Board Cut Planner to organise your own inputs and keep an editable project.

[34

post-91","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-wood-project-planning
["GET
