Six months later, the paint code, replacement part number and reason for a small design change can be surprisingly difficult to find. A project binder gives those details a home before receipts and photographs scatter across devices.

Build it around one project rather than trying to archive the entire house in an afternoon. The goal is a record you will actually update. A few named sections with dated entries are more useful than a complicated filing system that only makes sense on the day you create it.

Start with a short project summary

Write the room, the original purpose and the agreed scope. Add the start date, the current status and the people or businesses involved where relevant. Keep personal information to what you need for the project, particularly if you intend to share an export with someone else.

Include the decisions that would otherwise be hard to reconstruct: why a material changed, which work was excluded or what a contractor agreed to revisit. Record a dated change separately from the original scope so the history remains understandable.

Give photographs a role

Choose before, progress and after images that explain the work. Use a similar viewpoint for a before-and-after pair when possible, and label the location. A close-up of a product label can be more valuable for future maintenance than another wide room photograph.

Add a caption that says what the image shows and when it was taken. Do not expect the filename created by a phone to carry that meaning. Check the background for private documents, addresses or other details before including a photograph in a shared record.

Keep exact product information

Record the model, finish code, batch or colour information and supplier link for items you may need to match or maintain. Keep the purchase date and receipt reference beside them. “White paint” and “the small hinge” are not enough when a later repair depends on an exact match.

Store warranty and care information separately from a reminder to act on it. A reminder can point to the document, while the document remains available after the reminder is completed. If a warranty requires registration or has conditions, record the actual terms and what you have done rather than assuming ownership alone completes the process.

Keep unfinished items visible

A project can be mostly usable while still having unresolved work. Make a snag or follow-up list with a location, description, owner and status. Add the relevant photograph or reference to the agreed scope. This makes a conversation about an issue more concrete than a vague note saying the room is not quite finished.

When an item is resolved, record the date and outcome. Keep the history instead of deleting every completed entry. It can help explain a later question about what was supplied, adjusted or replaced.

Save both a readable copy and the editable record

An HTML report or printed PDF is useful for reading and sharing. A photo archive preserves the selected images. The app’s project backup serves a different purpose: it keeps the editable data needed to restore the project in a compatible workspace. Check which files you are downloading and open them before relying on them.

Keep a copy outside the browser, especially before changing devices or clearing stored website data. Browser storage is convenient for returning to a project, but it is not a cloud archive. At completion, add one short summary of what changed and where the most important records are kept. That turns a collection of files into a useful handover to your future self.

Open Project Binder to organise your own inputs and keep an editable project.

[29

post-81","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-project-records
["GET
