Gondolas in San Francisco? : urbanplanning

San Francisco infamously has a couple of high-frequency metro stops with limited pedestrian access and mobility. But there are some neighborhoods near these stops that could support development — they just happen to be on hills.

I had the idea that you could build gondolas linking these stops to the neighborhoods. Here we have Forest Hill to the Portola and to Forest Hill (it’s weird — Forest Hill station is in Laguna Honda), 22nd street Caltrain to Potrero Hill, and Glen Park to Diamond Heights. In each case the top of the gondola has a few blocks around it that aren’t very steep.

These neighborhoods otherwise rely on cars or relatively infrequent buses, and there is consequent traffic due to the constraints of the road network. The gondolas would link to excellent transit stations and help fix this.
